Sample Job Description: Leave Program Specialist (a Job Worth its Weight in Documentation)

Job descriptions are the glue that holds together organizational hierarchy and work processes. When they are well-written, job descriptions create tangible objectives and signify accountability.

To keep their companies in compliance with federal and state employment laws, human resources professionals need to be certain that the essential functions of every job are clearly documented. When defending decisions pertaining to an employee whose job the company has terminated following a leave of absence, a list of essential functions — shared with the employee’s health care provider in conjunction with a fitness-for-duty form — could be your best legal defense against complaints filed under the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Family and Medical Leave Act.

The HR department also is responsible for keeping its own house clean. That is, HR does not want to be caught like a cobbler whose children have no shoes if the U.S. Department of Labor comes knocking to investigate a leave situation gone awry.

The following sample job description provides an overview of the range of responsibilities that could pertain to the function of a leave program specialist. The existence of such a role could help your company manage the complexity of FMLA, ADA and short-term and long-term disability administration.
